Health Insurance Coverage Rates Increase among Young Adults (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Sept. 20, 2011)

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has published Early Release of Estimates From the National Health Interview Survey, January-March 2011.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has published Early Release of Estimates From the National Health Interview Survey, January-March 2011.  Findings from the survey show that 46.5 million persons of all ages (15.3%) were uninsured at the time of interview during the first three months of 2011. Other findings: 

  • The percentage of uninsured young adults (age 18 to 25), dropped from 33.9% in 2010 to 30.4%. 
  • More than one-third of children (40.2%) were covered by a public plan, compared with 15.9% of adults aged 18-64.
  • Almost two-thirds (64.0%) of adults aged 18-64 were covered by a private plan, compared with 54.4% of children under age 18.
  • Hispanic persons were more likely than non-Hispanic white, non-Hispanic black, and non-Hispanic Asian persons to be uninsured. 
  • Among adults who lacked a high school diploma, 30.8% were uninsured.
