The Food Research and Action Center released a report on the national School Breakfast Program for the school year 2007-2008.  Selected findings

  • The School Breakfast Program is reaching more low-income children: 4% more low-income children participated in 2007-2008 compared to the previous year.
  • Participation by schools grew 1.1% last year: 85.7% of schools that participate in the School Lunch Program now offer breakfast as well.

  • States vary in the ratio of low-income children in the School Lunch Program to the School Breakfast Program.  The ten states with the highest ratio include New Mexico, South Carolina, West Virginia, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Mississippi, Georgia, Idaho, Vermont and Arkansas.  In these states, there are from 53.9 to 62.9 children receiving breakfast for every 100 children participating in the School Lunch Program.
