According to the most recent KIDS COUNT Data Book by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, child well-being has stagnated since 2000, after improvements in the 1990s. Some key findings:
- The child poverty rate has increased by 18% since 2000, from 17% to 20%.
- The percent of children in single-parent families has increased 10% since 2000, from 31% to 34%.
- The percent of low birthweight babies has increased 8% since 2000, from 7.6% to 8.2% in 2008.
- The infant mortality rate dropped only slightly, from 6.9 deaths per thousand live births in 2000 to 6.8 in 2007.
- The child death rate (deaths per 100,000 children ages 1-14) dropped 14%, from 22 in 2000 to 19 in 2007.
- The teen death rate (deaths per 100,000 children ages 15-19) dropped 7%, from 67 in 2000 to 62 in 2007.
- The teen birth rate (births per 1,000 females ages 5-19) dropped 15%.
- The percent of teens not in high school and not high school graduates (ages 16-19) dropped 45%, from 11% in 2000 to 6% in 2009.
