According to RealtyTrac, there was a 4% increase in the number of foreclosure filings in June (default notices, scheduled auctions and bank repossessions) compared to May 2011. Total foreclosures in June 2011 were 25% lower than in the previous six months and down 29% from the first half of 2010. The chief executive officer of RealtyTrac attributed the decline to delays in processing of foreclosures.

The number of monthly foreclosure filings has increased dramatically since 2005. In September 2005 there were less than 70,000 foreclosure filings. This number rose to almost 370,000 in March 2010. The number has since decreased somewhat to about 219,000 in April 2011.
